Current and prospective Peer Counselors, WIC staff, Childbirth Educators, Birth and Postpartum Doulas, Midwives, Birth Assistants, Physicians, Dietitcians, Nurses, hospital and clinic staff, public health professionals, Maternity Support Services staff, La Leche League Leaders, Social Workers, Human Services professionals, and interested professionals working with and supporting families during the childbearing year.
Existing and Potential Accreditations:
This seminar satisfies the workshop component for candidates seeking certification as a CAPPA Community Lactation Educator. This seminar satisfies the breastfeeding education requirement for DONA International Birth Doula candidates. This seminar is eligible for 16 ICEA* contact hour units. This seminar provides 16 CAPPA CEU's. DONA International recognizes CAPPA CEU's and participants may apply CEU's earned at this seminar toward DONA International Birth and Postpartum Doula re-certification.
Purpose:
This seminar is intended to increase the participants knowledge, skills, and abilities as it relates to fundamental lactation theory. This seminar is also intended to enhance professional attitudes and values as related to breastfeeding and the provision of one to one breastfeeding care and support. This seminar is designed to satisfy the Core Competencies in Breastfeeding Care and Services for All Health Professionals as outlined by the United States Breastfeeding Committee (no endorsement by the USBC is implied). CAPPA Community Lactation Educators may be considered qualified to provide one to one breastfeeding support and counseling as a Community Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. CAPPA Community Lactation Educators may also be considered qualified to provide basic lactation support and referrals in the home and clinic setting, health department setting, pump rental depot setting, and within hospital or free standing birth centers. The CAPPA Community Lactation Educator seminar does not prepare participants to facilitate organized breastfeeding classes to groups. This seminar does not include information related to the development of curriculum or facilitation of group breastfeeding classes. Participants who are seeking credentials that support the development of skills designed to enhance the participants qualifications to facilitate formal, organized breastfeeding classes to groups should explore the CAPPA Certified Lactation Educator (CLE) seminar 'Breastfeeding Essentials for the Professional'. The CAPPA Community Lactation Educator seminar is NOT an IBCLC exam prep course, nor does this seminar prepare participants to become IBCLC's. The CAPPA Community Educator does not diagnose breastfeeding related conditions or problems, nor does the LE(C) perform evaluation and assessments of the breastfeeding dyad.
